Frequently asked questions

What do most people want to know about Conto?

How the treasurer model differs from peer-to-peer apps, whether participants need to sign up (no), how it compares to Splitwise and Splid, and how to use it for bachelor parties, group trips, and roommate bills.

    What is Conto?
Conto is a group expense tracker built around a single treasurer. One person handles the money — collecting from the group, paying vendors, and reconciling at the end. Other participants don't need accounts.
How do I split a bill without everyone signing up?
Use a treasurer-led tool like Conto. The organizer creates the group and adds participants by name. Participants get a public link showing the running tally. Only the organizer needs an account.
What's the best way to track bachelor party expenses?
Designate one organizer as treasurer. Have them collect a flat amount from each attendee up front, pay every vendor, and log each expense. Conto computes the final reconciliation so any leftover is refunded or any shortfall is collected with one transfer per person.
Do participants need to install an app?
No. Conto is web-based and participants only need a link. The treasurer is the only person who creates an account.
    Is Conto free?
Yes. There's no paid tier today.
How is Conto different from Splitwise?
Splitwise is peer-to-peer: every participant signs up and the app computes a settlement graph between everyone. Conto is treasurer-led: one person handles all the money and everyone else just pays them. Conto has fewer features but dramatically less setup friction.
How is Conto different from Splid?
Splid is a peer-to-peer mobile app where everyone joins a group code. Conto is a web tool that doesn't ask anything of participants. Splid wins for offline use; Conto wins for zero-friction setup.
Can I use Conto for ongoing roommate bills?
Yes, if one roommate is already the household money handler (e.g. their card is on the utilities). Conto logs each monthly bill and divides it across roommates, who pay the treasurer once a month.
What if a participant disputes an expense?
The treasurer can edit any expense before settlement. The public group link shows the full expense history with notes, so disputes are visible to everyone.
Can I export the group's expenses?
Yes. Each group exports to CSV with full expense history and per-participant totals.
    Does Conto handle multiple currencies?
Each group runs in a single currency. Multi-currency is on the roadmap.
What happens to my data if I stop using Conto?
Export your groups to CSV at any time. Closed accounts are deleted along with their data.
